Post-tensioning is a critical technique in modern bridge construction. It allows engineers to build longer spans, thinner sections, and more efficient structures than conventional reinforced concrete.
How Post-Tensioning Works
Steel strands or bars are placed in ducts within the concrete before pouring. Once the concrete reaches the required strength, these strands are tensioned using hydraulic jacks, compressing the concrete and increasing its load-carrying capacity.
Applications in Bridge Construction
Post-tensioning is used in precast segmental bridges, balanced cantilever construction, and incrementally launched bridges. On the USW Elevated Motorway project, over 2,203 precast segments were installed using post-tensioning techniques.
