Bridge Bearing
Installation

Precision installation of pot bearings, elastomeric pads, and sliding bearings with sub-millimetre set-out tolerances, non-shrink grout bedding, and load transfer verification.

Engineering Overview

Bridge bearings transfer superstructure loads to the substructure while accommodating thermal movement, rotation, and seismic displacement. JCY provides bearing set-out engineering, levelling pad preparation, grouting supervision, and load path verification for pot, elastomeric, and sliding bearing types -- including approximately 400 bearing installations on the USW Elevated Motorway in Morocco.

What Bearing Installation Involves

Every bridge bearing must be installed to precise positional and angular tolerances to ensure the superstructure loads are transferred correctly to the substructure. A bearing that is misaligned by even a few millimetres can induce unintended stress concentrations in the pier cap or abutment, leading to localised cracking and long-term maintenance problems.

The installation sequence begins with survey set-out of the bearing position on the pier or abutment pedestal. A levelling mortar or steel shim pack is prepared to achieve the design bearing level, accounting for construction tolerances in the substructure concrete. The bearing is then placed, checked for position and orientation, and grouted into its final position using non-shrink cementitious grout.

Different bearing types serve different structural functions. Pot bearings accommodate rotation while restraining lateral movement. Elastomeric bearings provide both rotational and translational flexibility through rubber deformation. Sliding bearings use PTFE-to-stainless-steel interfaces to permit large horizontal displacements while maintaining low friction coefficients.

Bearing Set-Out & Levelling

Survey-controlled positioning to design coordinates, levelling pad preparation using shim packs or mortar beds, and angular alignment verification before grouting.

Grouting & Bedding

Non-shrink cementitious grout placement, grout formwork construction, pour sequencing to prevent air entrapment, and curing regime management for full contact bearing.

Load Transfer Verification

Confirmation of bearing engagement under dead load, movement capability checks post-stressing, and documentation of initial bearing displacement readings for asset handover.

On the USW Elevated Motorway, JCY supervised the installation of approximately 400 bridge bearings across segmental viaduct spans, ramp structures, and interchange bridges. Bearing types included pot bearings at fixed piers, guided sliding bearings at expansion piers, and free sliding bearings at abutments -- each requiring specific set-out procedures and orientation controls.

In Adelaide, bearing installation engineering has been provided on the T2T and Darlington corridor bridges, where SuperT beam bearings required coordination with beam delivery schedules and crane operations to maintain programme continuity.
