Concrete Rehabilitation
& Repair

Structural concrete repair, sedimentary tank rehabilitation, cathodic protection assessment, and reinforcement restoration for bridges, water treatment facilities, and ageing civil infrastructure.

Engineering Overview

Concrete rehabilitation restores structural capacity and extends the service life of deteriorated concrete infrastructure. JCY provides condition assessment, repair methodology development, and construction supervision for patch repairs, crack injection, cathodic protection evaluation, and reinforcement restoration on bridges, sedimentary tanks, and water treatment structures -- including the Bolivar WWTP rehabilitation program.

What Concrete Rehabilitation Involves

Concrete deterioration in infrastructure assets typically results from chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion, carbonation, chemical attack in wastewater environments, or structural overloading. The rehabilitation process begins with a condition assessment that maps the extent and severity of deterioration, identifies the underlying mechanism, and determines whether the structure can be repaired in situ or requires partial reconstruction.

Patch repair is the most common intervention: deteriorated concrete is removed to behind the reinforcement, corroded bars are cleaned or replaced, a bonding agent is applied, and proprietary repair mortar is placed in layers to rebuild the section profile. For structures with widespread corrosion, cathodic protection systems may be assessed as an alternative to wholesale concrete removal -- either impressed current or sacrificial anode systems that halt the electrochemical corrosion process.

Crack injection uses low-viscosity epoxy or polyurethane resins injected under pressure to seal structural cracks, restore load transfer across the crack plane, and prevent further moisture ingress. In water-retaining structures such as sedimentary tanks, crack sealing is critical to maintaining operational containment and preventing ground contamination.

Patch Repair

Concrete removal to sound substrate, reinforcement preparation, bonding agent application, and repair mortar placement in controlled layer thicknesses with curing regime management.

Cathodic Protection Assessment

Half-cell potential mapping, chloride profiling, corrosion rate measurement, and feasibility assessment for impressed current or sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems.

Crack Injection

Low-pressure epoxy injection for structural crack repair, high- pressure polyurethane injection for active water leaks, and surface sealing for non-structural shrinkage cracks.

Repair Methodologies

At the Bolivar Wastewater Treatment Plant, JCY provided construction engineering for the rehabilitation of sedimentary tanks that had suffered severe concrete deterioration from hydrogen sulphide (H2S) attack and chloride exposure. The work involved condition assessment of tank walls and columns, development of repair methodologies for different deterioration mechanisms, and construction supervision of patch repairs, protective coatings, and structural strengthening measures.

Bridge rehabilitation experience spans the DIT SA bridge renewal program, where concrete repair and joint replacement works were delivered on operational bridge assets across the South Australian road network. These projects required integration of concrete repair sequencing with traffic management, weather constraints, and asset operational requirements.
