Expansion Joint
Installation
Modular, finger, and strip seal expansion joints installed in both new-build and live traffic environments -- including gap calculations, thermal settings, and waterproofing integration.
Expansion joints accommodate thermal movement, creep, and shrinkage between bridge spans while providing a smooth riding surface and waterproof seal. JCY engineers joint selection, gap calculations based on installation temperature and design movement ranges, blockout preparation, and joint installation sequencing -- including installations under live traffic on operational bridges.
What Expansion Joint Installation Involves
An expansion joint sits at the interface between two bridge spans or between a span and an abutment. It must accommodate the full range of thermal expansion and contraction that the bridge will experience over its design life while maintaining ride quality, waterproofing integrity, and structural load transfer across the joint gap.
Joint gap calculations are temperature-dependent. The gap setting at installation must account for the ambient temperature at the time of placement relative to the bridge's mean annual temperature. Setting the gap too wide in summer means the joint may over-close in winter; too narrow and the joint may overextend during hot periods. These calculations feed directly into the installation procedure and must be verified on site before the joint is fixed in position.
For live traffic installations, the work must be staged within traffic management windows -- typically night shifts with lane closures. The blockout is saw-cut, the existing joint or surfacing is removed, anchor bolts are drilled and set, the joint is aligned and levelled, and header concrete or epoxy mortar is placed and cured before the lane is returned to traffic.
Joint Type Selection
Engineering assessment of movement range, skew angle, traffic loading, and noise requirements to select between modular, finger, strip seal, or compression seal joint types.
Gap Calculations
Temperature-dependent gap setting calculations accounting for installation temperature, design movement range, creep and shrinkage effects, and manufacturer specifications.
Waterproofing Integration
Coordination of expansion joint waterproofing membranes with deck waterproofing systems, drainage troughs, and downpipe connections to prevent water ingress to bearings and substructure.

Countries
On the USW Elevated Motorway in Morocco, JCY engineered the installation of modular expansion joints across segmental viaduct spans accommodating movement ranges up to 480 mm. Each joint required precise gap setting based on ambient temperature at installation and coordination with the post-tensioning stressing schedule that influenced span shortening.
In Adelaide, expansion joint works on the T2T and Darlington corridors included strip seal joint installations on new-build SuperT bridges and replacement joints on existing structures under live traffic conditions. Joint installation was staged within overnight traffic management windows to minimise road user impact.
